Our People

Carl Dutton, Owner

I started this company in 1984, back when Fair Oaks Ranch was mostly ranch land and a few early subdivisions. The name Mainspring comes from the coiled spring that carries a door’s full weight - one part fails, the whole system stops. That still describes how I think about this business. I’m on the phone most mornings, still drive to jobs when we’re stacked up, and I sign off on every 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. My wife says I talk about torsion springs at dinner. She’s not wrong.

Mike R., Lead Technician

Mike’s been with us 14 years and can diagnose a failing opener by sound alone. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie systems, and he’s the one we send when a customer has already had two other companies out and the door still isn’t right. Mike keeps a notebook of every oddball repair he’s seen - pinned spring brackets in Sendera Ranch, custom wood doors in Anaqua Springs that warped in the Hill Country humidity. Off the clock, he restores vintage motorcycles and applies the same patience to a 1972 Honda that he does to a seized torsion tube.

Doris V., Senior Installer

Doris joined us in 2016 after ten years in commercial door systems, and she handles our new installations and full replacements. She’s particularly sharp on Clopay and Amarr door lines, and she’s trained three of our apprentices through the K.E.Y.S. program. Doris measures twice, explains the quote once, and won’t let a job leave until she’s tested the balance and photo-eye alignment herself. She lives in Boerne and knows which way the afternoon sun hits Fair Oaks Ranch garages, so she can warn you when a dark-colored door will absorb too much heat and stress the opener.

James T., Service Coordinator

Elena M., Apprentice Technician

Elena started with us in 2023 after completing her mechanical certification at Northwest Vista. She’s working her way through the K.E.Y.S. journeyman program under Mike’s supervision and has already handled solo cable replacements and roller swaps across Fair Oaks Ranch and Helotes. She’s particularly good at explaining what’s wrong to homeowners who want to understand their own system. Elena’s first language is Spanish, which has helped us serve more families in the area without relying on translation apps that garble technical terms. She runs trail races on Saturdays and claims the Hill Country hills are easier than a heavy 16×7 insulated door on a high-lift track.
