The label on your opener motor housing will show the model number, usually starting with 8160, 8355, or 8550 for belt-drive units, or 3255 and 8365 for chain-drive models. The drum itself mounts to the torsion tube above the door, not the opener motor, so we also need your door’s width, height, and whether it is standard-lift or low-headroom.

OEM LiftMaster drums and cables are available, but we often install quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT or Clopay that meet the same torque specs and carry the same 90-day coverage under our promise. The gotcha most owners miss: LiftMaster-branded drums for the 8500W wall-mount series are proprietary and will not interchange with standard torsion setups. If you have a jackshaft opener mounted on the wall beside the door, call us before ordering parts. We carry both configurations on the truck, but they are not interchangeable.

Signs Your LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When one cable frays or a drum slips, the lift becomes uneven. The door twists in the tracks, and the opener safety sensors may reverse the door thinking something is blocking it.

There is a safe middle ground. You can inspect the cables from inside the garage with the door closed and the opener disconnected. Look for fraying, rust, or cables off the drum. Check the drum set screws for looseness. Do not touch the torsion springs or attempt to wind or unwind them. The springs store enough torque to cause serious injury or worse.

Replacing the drum requires releasing spring tension, removing the old drum, seating the new one at precise alignment, and retensioning the system. The cables must wind onto the drum in the correct direction and number of turns. One mistake and the door can slam down or jump the tracks.
